Making the most of your time in Koh Tao
Koh Tao is one of the most unspoiled holiday destinations in Thailand. It is located in the Southern part of the Gulf of Thailand and is called Koh Tao because the island looks like a turtle. By a happy coincidence there are colonies of turtles living on the north of the island. This post will make a few recommendations about beaches to visit and activities to try to make the most out of a holiday in Koh Tao.
The majority of first time visitors to Koh Tao usually stay on Sairee Beach. It is the longest and one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It is blessed with a great sunset every night and the best amenities and facilities on the island. It is also the center of the diving industry on the island. It is often possible to get free accommodation if you sign up for a diving course.
One of the most notable things about Sairee Beach is that it is the beach with the best night life. Bars such as Lotus Bar and AC Party Bar frequently throw all night parties complete with happy hour, fire dancing and DJs pumping out the cheesy hits from yesteryear. Also on Sairee Beach is the infamous Queen’s Cabaret which features an outrageous (but clean) show by lady boys.
If you are interested in nightlife then Cloud Nine in Mae Haad has a comedy night and Safety Stop Pub (also in Mae Haad) has English pub grub and draft beer. On Chalok Baan Kao Exit Bar and Buddha on the Beach are both worth a visit.
The main activity in Koh Tao is appreciating the natural beauty of the island. The most spectacular spot is Nang Yuan island. It is three small islands joined by a sandbar to make a natural wonder. Other picturesque beaches include Mango Bay, Sai Daeng and Tanote Bay. It is worth making a day trip to any of these beaches.
If you are interested in snorkeling then the possibilities are great. There’s shark island off Sai Daeng Beach, there’s the double coral reefs of Mango Bay and there’s Thian Og Bay which is famous for its sharks.
The same goes for diving. There are great spots just off the coast as well as further field such as Sail Rock and Chumphon Pinnacles. Not only are the prices for diving competitive in Koh Tao but the island has the best access to the best sites in the Gulf.
And finally, once you’ve had enough of nightlife, snorkeling and diving there’s just lying around on white sand beaches and cooling off in the crystal clear waters of the ocean. Koh Tao is a wonderful place to relax.
